Polestar has just unveiled its most ambitious roadmap to date: a wagon variant of the Polestar 4 — with a real rear window — is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026, and the next-generation Polestar 2 will make its return in early 2027. In total, four new electric models by 2028, enough to expand the brand's market coverage from 25% to 55%.

"The new variant of the Polestar 4 is absolutely coming to the US. It has genes of an estate, with a window in the back. It's very progressive. There is no car like this." — Michael Lohscheller, CEO of Polestar

The Polestar 4 Wagon: When Stockholm Borrows from Gothenburg

The current Polestar 4 made the radical choice of eliminating the rear window in favor of a backup camera feed displayed on a digital rearview mirror. A design decision that Car and Driver summed up soberly: "the rear camera proves an unconvincing substitute in bad weather." The message was received.

The new variant retains the Polestar 4 platform but adopts a higher roofline, more cargo space, and finally, a real glass window at the back. Spy shots spotted in China, along with the official teaser, reveal a raised wagon silhouette — a hybrid between a Scandinavian estate and an SUV. Michael Lohscheller, never one to mince words, summarized the ambition with a certain aplomb: "Sweden is famous for its wagons, and its SUVs are world-class. We combine the space of a wagon and the versatility of an SUV with the dynamic performance that characterizes Polestar."

Production will be handled in South Korea, at the same factory as the Polestar 4 coupe, which is no trivial detail: it shields the model from the Sino-American tariff barriers that have doomed several of the brand's models in the North American market. The CEO confirmed without ambiguity to InsideEVs — this wagon is coming to the United States.

💡 Did you know?
The Polestar 4 is currently the brand's best-selling model. Produced in South Korea, it bypasses the US tariffs that block models manufactured in China.

What Price for This Wagon Variant?

No official pricing has been announced yet. But based on available information, the price should remain close to that of the current coupe model, which starts at $47,800 in the United States and €61,800 in France. Given that production remains on the same platform and in the same factory, it would be surprising — and commercially unwise — to price it significantly higher. The only other electric wagon alternative in the US, the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo, exceeds $118,000. There's plenty of room.

The Polestar 2 Returns, and It No Longer Looks Like Itself

This might be the most symbolic news of the lot. The Polestar 2 was quietly discontinued after the 2025 model year, a victim of tariffs — it was produced in China. The brand is announcing its return for early 2027, but the official teasers show a car that is unrecognizable: a new front end, redesigned lighting, a slightly more compact silhouette.

"The Polestar 2 is the foundation of our brand," the CEO declared. A somewhat predictable line, certainly, but one that reflects a commercial reality. For years, the model was the primary gateway to the brand for European customers. Its disappearance, even temporary, left a gaping hole in the lineup — especially against the Tesla Model 3, the BMW i4, or the Hyundai Ioniq 6.

According to our information, the next generation would be produced outside of China, which would allow it to return to the United States — a market from which it had been excluded even before its official discontinuation. No official confirmation on the production site at this stage.

💡 Key figure
Polestar aims to expand its market coverage from 25% today to 55% thanks to its four new models by 2028 — including the Polestar 7, a compact SUV expected that same year.
