BYD Dolphin vs Renault 5: 2026 EV hatchback price war

The battle for affordable electric hatchbacks intensifies in 2026 with a flood of cut-price Chinese models. The BYD Dolphin starts at €22,990, the Geely EX2 targets €23,000, and the Citroën ë-C3 fires back at €11,700 thanks to the Plan Auto+ subsidies. Meanwhile, the Renault 5 E-Tech holds its commercial crown with 3,952 registrations in January.
"We sold 465,000 EX2 units in China last year—more than five times Renault 5 volumes over the same period." — Geely Europe executive
The Chinese offensive changes everything
Chinese brands are flooding the European affordable electric hatchback segment. BYD launches its Dolphin (the European version of its Chinese bestseller) from €22,990, while Geely prepares the EX2 for summer 2026 in the UK. This compact sedan measuring 4.13 meters already conquered China with 465,775 sales in 2025, even outselling the BYD Seagull.
The main weapon? Unbeatable pricing. The Geely EX2 will cost around €23,000 in Europe with an 85 kW motor and a 40.1 kWh battery promising 300 to 350 km WLTP range. This aggressive positioning directly challenges the Renault 5, Citroën ë-C3, and other segment stalwarts.
Stellantis plays the floor price card
Facing Asian competition, Stellantis counterattacks with radical pricing. The Citroën ë-C3 becomes Europe's cheapest electric car at €11,700, banking on €4,500 in Plan Auto+ 2026 subsidies. This pricing offensive places the French car well below both Chinese and European rivals.
The group's strategy doesn't stop there. Multiple Stellantis models adopt this "entry price" approach to reclaim market share from new Asian players. The Fiat Grande Panda Electric follows this logic, positioning itself below the Hyundai Inster and Renault 5.

Renault holds firm despite the pressure
The Renault 5 E-Tech resists competitive pressure for now. With 3,952 registrations in January 2026, it maintains its lead among French electric hatchbacks, far ahead of the Peugeot e-208 (1,666 units) and Citroën ë-C3 (1,453 units).
But Renault isn't sitting idle. The French automaker prepares the Twingo Electric for €19,990 and develops the R4 E-Tech at €24,990 to expand affordable electric offerings. The brand also relies on Chinese tech: from 2027, the Cléon plant will assemble 120,000 electric motors per year designed by Shanghai E-Drive for entry-level R5 and R4 versions.

Headed for a generalized price war?
This electric hatchback battle reflects a bigger issue: hitting the 25% electric sales target mandated by the European CAFE standard. In January 2026, the market reached just 15%, far below the regulatory goal that could cost automakers billions in fines.
Volkswagen joins the race with its upcoming ID.Polo expected in September 2026, while Ford prepares a Fiesta Electric based on the Renault 5 platform. German and French manufacturers realize they can no longer ignore affordable electric hatchbacks—a segment long neglected in favor of more profitable premium SUVs.
When will these new models arrive?
The Geely EX2 arrives summer 2026 in the UK before expanding across Europe. The Renault Twingo is expected in March 2026, while the Volkswagen ID.Polo hits dealerships in September. The BYD Dolphin is already available to order.

The stakes go beyond simple commercial competition. This price war could reshape the European automotive landscape, forcing traditional makers to rethink their business models. Between Chinese innovation, dumping strategies, and subsidy races, 2026 looks like the year everything shifts on the electric hatchback market.
