The new Nissan Micra arrives in France in early 2026 with a starting price set at €21,495. Based on the Renault 5 platform, this electric city car shares its 40 and 52 kWh batteries with its French cousin while retaining its own character. Facing stiff competition from the BYD Dolphin and the Mini Cooper Electric, the Micra is betting on its French production to win over buyers.

Nissan's strategy is clear: capitalize on the alliance with Renault to offer a credible alternative to the R5 E-Tech. The Douai plant now assembles both models on the same production lines, allowing for shared development costs. The Micra follows the proven recipe: two batteries, three trim levels, and a confident retro style.

Two Batteries for Two Uses

The Micra Standard Range packs a 40 kWh battery for 198 km of WLTP range and a 121 hp motor. Its 0-100 km/h time is 9.0 seconds. The Extended Range version steps up to 52 kWh for 260 km of range with 148 hp and a 0-100 km/h time of 8.0 seconds.

These figures place the Micra slightly behind the Mini Cooper Electric in terms of pure performance, but the range remains average for the segment. The BYD Dolphin Surf, with its 310 km of range, does better on paper.

💡 Key Figure
The Micra Extended Range boasts 260 km of WLTP range, which is 62 km more than the Standard Range version despite only 12 kWh of additional battery capacity.

What's the Difference with the Renault 5?

Technically, almost none. Nissan and Renault have opted for an approach similar to the one used with the Qashqai and Kadjar in the past. Same CMF-B EV platform, same LFP batteries, same powertrain. The differences lie in the exterior design and interior layout.

The Micra adopts elliptical headlights and round taillights reminiscent of the 2002 K12. The cabin features a standard 10.1-inch screen and a 7-inch digital instrument cluster. The Google Automotive system integrates route planning with charging stops.

Aggressive Pricing Against Mini

Nissan aligns its prices with Renault: €21,495 for the Standard Range Engage, €23,495 for the Advance 40 kWh, and €25,495 for the Advance 52 kWh. The top-of-the-line Evolve trim peaks at €28,365 with the larger battery.

These prices place the Micra in direct competition with the Mini Cooper Electric (starting at €32,000) and the BYD Dolphin (€19,990). Nissan's advantage: a mature distribution network and an 8-year battery warranty.

The BYD Offensive Changes the Game

The Chinese manufacturer BYD is disrupting the rules with its Dolphin. Priced at €19,990, this electric city car boasts 310 km of WLTP range with its 44.9 kWh LFP battery. Its 95 hp motor allows for a 0-100 km/h time of 12.3 seconds, less sporty than the Micra but perfectly adequate for urban use.

BYD's advantage lies in its Blade Battery technology and its 6-year/150,000 km warranty. The Dolphin sold over 67,000 units in Europe in 2025, confirming the appetite for affordable Chinese electric vehicles.

BYD dethroned Tesla in 2025 to become the world's leading electric vehicle manufacturer, with over 3.6 million units sold.

Mini Persists in the Premium Segment

Mini is adopting a different strategy with its Cooper Electric. At €32,000, the British city car bets on exclusivity and performance. Its 184 hp motor propels the Cooper E from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. The 305 km WLTP range remains decent despite a 54.2 kWh battery.

The Cooper S Electric pushes the exercise further with 218 hp and a 0-100 km/h time of 6.7 seconds. Mini embraces its move upmarket, leaving the entry-level segment to the Micra, Renault 5, and BYD Dolphin.
