XPeng GX: Chinese Electric SUV Inspired by Range Rover at €50k

Chinese automaker XPeng unveils its GX, a 5.2-meter electric SUV that borrows its aesthetic codes from the Range Rover. With a claimed range of up to 1,000 km thanks to its range-extending technology, this new flagship aims to seduce premium customers at a far more accessible price than its British inspiration.

Design that doesn't hide its inspiration

There's no mistaking it: the XPeng GX displays an obvious lineage with the iconic Range Rover. At 5.2 meters long, this premium SUV showcases the same generous proportions as its inspiration. The rectilinear styling, perfectly horizontal hood, the ship-like silhouette... it's all there.

The front end borrows its codes from the British SUV with a very vertical bumper and high hood. The only notable differences: wide LED light bands at the rear and front, a typically Chinese signature. The automaker has also retained the black B and C pillars that blend into the glazed surfaces, creating the illusion of a floating roof.

Flush door handles still equip this model, although they will be banned on the Chinese market starting January 2027. A cruel irony for a vehicle that bets everything on cutting-edge technology.

Technology serving range

The GX is built on XPeng's brand new SEPA 3.0 platform, designed to integrate more artificial intelligence and driving assistance features. The model adopts fully electric steering (steer-by-wire) and a rear-wheel steering system.

Unlike some competitors, XPeng skips traditional LiDAR sensors in favor of a vision-based system, similar to Tesla. This approach reduces costs while maintaining autonomous driving capabilities.

What range is claimed?

The Chinese automaker claims exceptional range of 1,000 km thanks to its EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) architecture. This technical feat relies on an LFP battery whose capacity hasn't yet been revealed, assisted by a range extender composed of a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine.

This hybrid solution reassures customers about long journeys, even if it sacrifices the pure efficiency of a fully electric vehicle. Fuel consumption of these range-extended models typically remains higher than that of an equivalent pure electric car.

A disruptive pricing strategy

Positioned above the G9, XPeng's current flagship SUV, the GX is intended to be the brand's new flagship. According to initial reports, it should start at well under €50,000 on the Chinese market, an enormous gap compared to the Range Rover which easily exceeds €150,000.

This aggressive pricing strategy aims to democratize access to automotive luxury, a specialty of Chinese automakers. The GX offers a 6-seat cabin and integrates the brand's latest technological innovations, including an augmented reality head-up display.
