Toyota RAV4 & Land Cruiser: Supply Tactics & Market Shift

Toyota is playing hardball with its new RAV4 and Land Cruiser strategy. Deliberate RAV4 scarcity is forcing dealers to pivot to other models, while markups hit $5,000 at some American dealerships. This market shift is opening the door to alternatives that are eating into the Japanese best-sellers' dominance.

The RAV4 Shortage Becomes Commercial Strategy
Toyota just admitted what everyone suspected: the automaker can't keep up with demand for its 2026 RAV4. At the NADA show in Las Vegas, Dave Christ, VP of Toyota Motor North America, asked dealers to "get creative" to make up for lost sales. The transition to the new generation has temporarily halted production across three plants in Kentucky, Ontario, and Japan.
This isn't accidental. Toyota has maintained the industry's lowest inventory levels in America for two years straight. Result: some dealers are capitalizing with flat-out obscene margins. Stevens Creek Toyota is asking $52,857 for a RAV4 Limited—that's $4,700 over MSRP. Others like Magnussen's Toyota systematically tack on $3,999 to every 2026 model.
Land Cruiser: Between Spectacular Survival and Mainstream Appeal
The Toyota Land Cruiser is making headlines for entirely different reasons. In the Philippines, a heavily armored example belonging to the mayor of Shariff Aguak took a direct RPG rocket hit on January 25th. Surveillance footage shows the black 4x4 drive away after impact—a testament to the model's legendary ruggedness.
On the civilian side, Toyota is democratizing the Land Cruiser with a 2.8-liter diesel micro-hybrid 48V engine. This entry-level version aims to make the genuine off-roader more accessible, though French eco-taxes could quickly kill European enthusiasm.

Rivals Capitalizing on Toyota's Misstep
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is cashing in with a €9,900 rebate that undercuts RAV4 pricing. At 4.65 meters and 520 liters of cargo space, it directly rival the Japanese SUV while boasting CERO certification and over 400 km range.
Used BMW X3 models are looking mighty attractive too. A 2022 example starts around $26,500 on Kelley Blue Book—roughly the price of a new RAV4. That equation changes everything for buyers seeking premium without the sticker shock.
When Will the New RAV4 Plug-In Arrive?
Toyota is keeping quiet on European availability for the 2026 RAV4 PHEV. In Japan, the model just launched with a fresh "Power Supply Time Priority Mode" that can run a household for seven days during outages. Electric range jumps to 62 miles (100 km) courtesy of the 22.7 kWh battery, supporting 50 kW charging.
The French version should arrive in coming months, but Toyota hasn't confirmed whether it'll get the home power backup feature. That technology remains Japan-exclusive for now, where electrical standards differ (100V versus 120V in the US).
Suzuki Owns Its RAV4 Copy-Paste
Suzuki isn't hiding it: the new Across is a rebadged RAV4. The formula's worked since 2020, so why mess with it? Only the grille and a few cosmetic touches set the two SUVs apart. Under the hood, it's identical—a 304-horsepower plug-in hybrid with AWD.
This approach lets Suzuki bulk up its European lineup without dropping serious R&D cash. The brand sticks with the PHEV version, leaving the standard hybrid to Toyota. A pragmatic move that should attract buyers seeking a RAV4 alternative with less dealer traffic.
What Will the Middle East RAV4 Gasoline Cost?
In the Middle East, Toyota is keeping a 2.0-liter gasoline 169-horsepower version on the 2026 RAV4 alive. This engine is banned in Europe and North America due to emissions standards
