Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 2027: Six-Cylinder Power Returns with 449 Horsepower

Mercedes is drawing a line under its controversial four-cylinders and returning to a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six for the new 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4MATIC+. With 449 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque, this performance SUV replaces both the previous GLC 43 and GLC 63 S E Performance. Available in SUV and Coupé versions, it arrives at dealerships during 2026.

Mercedes Buries Its Four-Cylinder AMG Engines

After two difficult years with complex four-cylinder hybrid powertrains, Mercedes-AMG is changing gears. The GLC 43 and GLC 63 S E Performance are disappearing from the 2027 lineup. Enter the GLC 53 4MATIC+, the sole performance variant betting on a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six.

This evolution marks a return to form for the Affalterbach brand, answering purists' demands for more soul and character. The jump from four to six cylinders brings a 34-horsepower gain over the previous GLC 43, totaling 449 horsepower.

A Ground-Up Reworked Six-Cylinder Engine

Under the hood, the M256M isn't a simple copy-paste from the CLE 53. AMG has completely rethought this powerplant with a new cylinder head, optimized intake and exhaust manifolds, a new camshaft, and a larger-volume intake system. The goal: stronger response at higher revs and sharper throttle reaction.

Peak torque climbs to 600 Nm between 2,200 and 5,200 rpm, with an overboost function temporarily pushing output to 640 Nm for 10 seconds. This setup allows the GLC 53 to hit 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds—0.3 seconds quicker than the old GLC 43.

Top speed reaches 250 km/h, raised to 270 km/h with the AMG Dynamic Plus package. Performance places the new model squarely between the old 43 and 63, but with more cohesive engineering.

Mild Hybrid and New Technologies

There's no turning away from electrification entirely. The GLC 53 integrates a 48-volt mild-hybrid system with an integrated starter-generator in the AMG Speedshift TCT 9G gearbox. This setup adds a sporadic 17 kW (23 horsepower) and 205 Nm extra, particularly during overboost phases.

Mild hybridization also improves stop-start functions with nearly imperceptible restarts and enables energy recovery during braking. An intelligent compromise avoiding PHEV complexity while retaining environmental benefits.

World First: Drift Mode on an AMG SUV

A significant innovation—the Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 becomes the first AMG SUV equipped with a Drift mode. This function, reserved for closed circuits, leverages the electronic limited-slip differential mounted on the rear axle and the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive.

Driving modes are abundant: Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual, and Race round out the arsenal. Enough to satisfy Sunday drivers and daily commuters alike.

Starting Price?

Official pricing for the Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4MATIC+ hasn't been announced yet. According to our colleagues at Car and Driver, the SUV should start around $70,000 in the United States, while the Coupé version would exceed $75,000.

In Europe, expect pricing aligned with the previous GLC 63—roughly €85,000 for the SUV variant.

When Will It Arrive?

Mercedes-AMG hasn't revealed detailed delivery timelines, but first dealership arrivals are expected during 2026. Production occurs at the factory in Bremen, Germany, already running at high capacity to meet demand for the new electric GLC.

AMG Sonority and Distinctive Look

To let the six-cylinder sing, AMG developed a new exhaust system with custom resonators promising the trademark AMG "crackle." An optional AMG Real Performance Sound package with a mechanical valve will amplify the acoustic experience.

Visually, the GLC 53 stands out via 20-inch wheels, AMG-specific grille, and AMG exhaust outlets. The Coupé version retains its swooping roofline—style over practicality.

The Electric Future Takes Shape

This six-cylinder return shouldn't overshadow AMG's EV ambitions. A fully electric GLC is in development, fitted with three axial-flux motors from the AMG.EA platform. With peak output promised at up to 952 horsepower (700 kW), it will set new standards in high-performance electric.

Meanwhile, the GLC 53 reconnects with AMG fundamentals: more cylinders, more emotion, more character. A back-to-basics move that should court old-school enthusiasts, even if the
