Kia Sportage & Niro Hybrids: The Korean Answer to Toyota RAV4
The Kia Sportage hybrid boasts 239 hp and takes direct aim at the Toyota RAV4 with its 5.5 l/100km combined consumption. The Niro hybrid bets on compact efficiency with 141 hp and 4.5 l/100km. Two different approaches, one goal: shake up the hierarchy established by the Japanese pioneers on hybrid ground.
"The Niro EV, which was produced until the previous model, has been discontinued" — Jung Yoon-kyung, Senior Marketing Manager at Kia
The Korean manufacturer is no longer playing it safe. With the 2026 facelift of the Sportage and Niro, Kia is going all-in on conventional hybrids. No more EV for the Niro, no more plug-in hybrid on certain trims. The strategy is clear: offer credible alternatives to the benchmark Toyota and Honda with less wallet-busting prices.
The Sportage Hybrid Steps Up Its Game
The 2026 Kia Sportage hybrid hits hard with its 239 horsepower from a 1.6 T-GDI paired with an electric motor. This power puts the Korean SUV ahead of the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and its 218 hp. Performance-wise, 0-100 km/h is dispatched in 7.9 seconds.
The claimed consumption of 5.5 l/100km in the WLTP combined cycle is average for the segment, but it's the price that really hits the mark. With a current €7,000 discount, the Sportage hybrid drops to €32,550 in the Motion trim. A pricing offensive that places the Korean SUV well below the RAV4 Hybrid, which starts at €42,950.
The 587-liter boot (non-plug-in hybrid trim) clearly surpasses the RAV4 and its 520 liters. A significant advantage for families who actually load up their SUVs.
Niro Hybrid: The Pure Efficiency Bet
The Kia Niro hybrid plays a different tune with its 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine assisted by a 43-hp electric unit. The combined 141 horsepower might seem modest, but it's the consumption that impresses: 4.5 l/100km in the combined cycle.
This frugality puts the Niro in the top three of the most economical compact hybrid SUVs, alongside the Honda HR-V e:HEV and the Peugeot 2008 Hybrid. The difference? The price. With over €6,900 in discounts, the Niro hybrid becomes accessible from around €29,000 in the Concept trim.
Onboard Tech Makes the Difference
The cabins of both Korean models adopt Kia's digital philosophy. Dual 12.3-inch screens for instrumentation and infotainment on the Sportage, 10.25-inch screens on the Niro. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard.
The Sportage benefits from a few extra refinements: a 12-inch head-up display, ChatGPT-based voice interaction, and over-the-air updates. Features that remind you Kia wants to play in the premium league without charging the premium price.
What's the Warranty on These Hybrids?
Kia maintains its 7-year or 150,000 km warranty on all its models, hybrids included. This coverage far exceeds the 3 years offered by Toyota and Honda on their hybrid systems. A major argument when investing in a technology that's relatively new for the Korean manufacturer.
Facing the Japanese Competition
The Honda CR-V Hybrid and the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid remain the segment benchmarks, but their prices have skyrocketed. The CR-V starts around €45,000, the RAV4 Hybrid at €42,950. In this context, the Korean offerings make perfect sense.
