Kia PV5 vs VW ID.Buzz: Electric Van Showdown

Kia has announced the launch of its PV5, an electric van marking the Korean carmaker's entry into the light commercial vehicle market. At 4.70 m long and built on the dedicated "Platform Beyond Vehicle" architecture, this new rival to Volkswagen's ID.Buzz arrives with over 600 km of range and a world record up its sleeve.
"693.38 km covered without recharging on open road—that's a world record for an electric commercial vehicle." — Kia Corporation
A design that breaks the mold
The PV5 doesn't fade into the background. With its nearly sealed front face and narrow daytime running lights stretching into the A-pillars, Kia set out to mark its difference from traditional vans. The robust bumper splits into three separately replaceable sections—a clever trick for cutting repair costs when minor bumps happen (and they will, in the real world).
The rear stays more conventional with vertical taillights typical of the segment, but overall it radiates purposeful modernity. The 16-inch wheels might seem undersized for a vehicle this large, but they're part of the autonomy optimization strategy.
A platform built for professionals
Unlike most carmakers adapting car platforms, Kia developed its PBV platform (Platform Beyond Vehicle) specifically for commercial vehicles. This approach optimizes cargo space and livability in ways crossovers never could.
The PV5 comes in two versions: Passenger for people transport and Cargo for goods. With its boxy shape and 1.90 m height, it maximizes available interior space.
Performance that impresses
Power-wise, the PV5 Passenger packs a 71.2 kWh battery feeding a 160 hp electric motor. The advertised range exceeds 600 km WLTP—a figure that puts the Korean contender in the upper tier.
This remarkable performance earned the PV5 the "Van of the Year 2026" title, awarded by a jury of 26 European journalists. An achievement all the more striking since this is Kia's very first commercial van.
Against German competition
The PV5's main rival remains obviously the Volkswagen ID.Buzz, which benefits from the legendary Combi's heritage. But the comparison favors the Korean newcomer on several fronts.
With a starting price of €39,550 for the base version, the PV5 undercuts the ID.Buzz (€49,540) by €10,000. This pricing gap comes with superior range and more generous standard equipment—like two-tone paint included as standard.
📋 Fiche technique
When will it arrive?
The PV5 has already begun sales in several European markets since late 2025. In France, first deliveries are expected for spring 2026. Kia plans to distribute the vehicle through its regular dealer network, with dedicated services for business customers.
The future of the PBV lineup
The PV5 is just the opening move in Kia's electric commercial vehicle offensive. The company has already shown the PV7 concept—a larger model due by 2027. The brand is also exploring innovative concepts like the PV5 "Spielraum", co-developed with LG Electronics and equipped with integrated household appliances.
