Honda Civic 2026: Reliability, Global Recall, and Hybrid Evolution

The Honda Civic hits 2026 in fine form: top reliability scores from Consumer Reports, a global recall for wheel issues affecting over 700,000 units, and a Type R HRC packing competition-bred genes that's already got enthusiasts buzzing. Meanwhile, the next-gen model, due in 2027, promises to shed 90 kg and bring a revised e:HEV hybrid system.

Reliability: Still Its Best Selling Point
Nearly 30 million units sold since 1972. The Civic didn't build that rep on hot air. Consumer Reports proved it again in 2025: out of 17 trouble spots owners reported on, the Japanese compact scored perfect marks in 15 categories. That's a level few cars in this segment can claim.
The two areas that stumble a bit? Electrical accessories and the infotainment system. In plain English, some drivers lose audio during calls via Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, or Bluetooth. Annoying, not a dealbreaker. The wipers also cause grief in cold weather — their low resting position, outside the defroster zone, means they can freeze to the windshield. Nothing to cancel an order over, but worth knowing if you live up in the mountains.
A Global Recall for Wheels That Come Loose
Here's the bad news. Honda has launched a worldwide recall campaign covering more than 700,000 vehicles, under code 6HA. Affected are Civics and HR-Vs built between November 1, 2014, and July 1, 2021, equipped with aluminum alloy wheels fitted as accessories.
The issue stems from missing aluminum inserts in the mounting holes, which weakens how the lug nuts hold. Result: they can gradually loosen over miles. In extreme cases, according to Automag.fr, a wheel can actually detach while driving. In France, 19,425 vehicles are affected. In the UK, Honda is recalling 46,152 units of just the Civic from model years 2017 to 2021, per Autocar.
If your Civic is from that era and rides on factory Honda alloy wheels, check your mail for a dealer appointment. The fix is free and quick.
The 2025 Civic Hybrid: 48 MPG and a Massive Trunk
The 2025 Hatchback Hybrid at $31,300 is the version to eye if you're after a compact with no false notes. Its combined fuel economy of 48 mpg makes it one of the most efficient in the segment without going full EV. The trunk offers 24.5 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 46.2 cubic feet with the seats folded. In plain terms: a Labrador, two suitcases, and the weekend groceries fit without negotiating.
The e:HEV hybrid system pairs a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle engine with two electric motors for a total of 200 hp and 232 Nm of torque. The 0-60 mph sprint takes 6.2 seconds according to Car and Driver's tests — which, ironically, makes it quicker than the all-new Prelude Hybrid, which shares the exact same powertrain but lags at 6.5 seconds despite its $43,195 starting price. Physics doesn't lie.
