Audi Q3 2.0 TDI quattro: 193 hp diesel despite French penalties

The Audi Q3 is making a bold bet on diesel despite French tax penalties. The four-ringed marque now offers a 2.0 TDI with 193 horsepower paired with quattro all-wheel drive on its compact SUV. A version that starts at €52,905 in Spain but will cost an arm and a leg in France with nearly €17,500 in penalties.
"This new TDI quattro powertrain is aimed at drivers who rack up serious annual mileage and need the security of all-wheel drive" — Audi Spokesperson

A diesel that beefs up the lineup
The 2.0 TDI with 193 horsepower rounds out a Q3 range that launched cautiously with a base 150 hp diesel in front-wheel drive only. This new iteration develops 400 Nm of torque and pairs exclusively with the S-tronic 7-speed automatic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive.
The numbers speak for themselves: 7.5 seconds to 100 km/h and 220 km/h top speed for the standard Q3. The Q3 Sportback posts nearly identical figures, with a modest 221 km/h bonus.

What competition from the BMW X1?
The BMW X1 remains the Q3's chief rival in this segment. The Bavarian SUV currently offers substantial discounts on its xDrive30e plug-in hybrid version, with up to €11,980 off according to Carwow.
This strategy contrasts with Audi's bet on diesel. The Ingolstadt brand also offers a 272 hp e-hybrid variant with 120 kilometers of electric range, but it remains front-wheel drive only.
French penalties sting hard
In France, this TDI quattro version will be hamstrung by particularly steep taxation. The combined CO2 penalty (between €8,770 and €14,325 depending on emissions) and weight penalty (€3,215) can hit €17,500 total.
Result: the French price will easily exceed €63,000 for the base trim—pricier than the 272 hp plug-in hybrid in its higher trims. A paradox that risks killing French sales.
A gradually expanding lineup
Launched in June 2025, the new Audi Q3 is progressively broadening its catalog. The brand initially focused on the most profitable versions: a 150 hp 1.5 TFSI with mild-hybrid technology, the 150 hp 2.0 TDI diesel in front-wheel drive, and the 272 hp e-hybrid variant.

The Q3 Sportback followed in late summer 2025, offering a sportier alternative with its coupé silhouette. Now it's the TDI quattro's turn to complete the range and seduce winter driving enthusiasts and high-mileage drivers.
📋 Fiche technique
Deliveries starting this summer
Orders opened in March 2026, with first deliveries expected this summer. This strategy lets Audi offer customers an alternative who don't want to wait for a possible quattro version on the plug-in hybrid.
Audi's diesel gamble on the Q3 shows its determination to satisfy customers still attached to this fuel for long hauls and tough winter conditions. The question remains whether French buyers will stomach the premium price for all-wheel drive.
