Benjamin Bate, Tesla's director of operations and automotive engineering at Fremont, is leaving the company after more than eight years of service. His departure comes as Elon Musk just announced the halt of Model S and Model X production in Q2 2026 to make room for humanoid robot Optimus manufacturing.

"Model S and X production at Fremont will cease in the second quarter of 2026" — Elon Musk, 2025 Results Presentation

A departure that marks the end of an era

The news was first reported by US outlet Electrek, which spotted the update to Benjamin Bate's LinkedIn profile. The manager held several key positions at the California plant since arriving, starting with maintenance and paint shop oversight.

From December 2020 to August 2023, Bate oversaw production as director for the Model 3 and Model Y, Tesla's two most critical models. Since August 2023, he was running all vehicle operations and engineering for the site.

A complete career shift away from automotive

Benjamin Bate isn't joining a rival automaker—he's switching industries entirely. He's becoming plant director at Chemelex in Redwood City, California. The company positions itself as a global leader in electric heating solutions and sensor technology.

This career move is surprising given the usual pattern where Tesla executives jump to other automakers or automotive startups.

Who steps into Bate's shoes at Fremont?

Tesla hasn't announced a successor yet. That announcement will be closely watched as the plant faces a major transformation with the Model S and Model X shutdown.

The California facility maintains an announced production capacity of 100,000 units annually for these two premium models, though output hasn't been running at full throttle lately.

What's next for Fremont?

Elon Musk confirmed during the 2025 results presentation that the floor space freed up by the Model S and X halt will be converted to Optimus humanoid robot production. Output of over 550,000 Model 3 and Model Y units annually stays intact.

This pivot fits Musk's strategy to transform Tesla from a mere automaker into a tech-focused group centered on AI, autonomous mobility, and robotics. Robotaxis and the Optimus project are now the company's development priorities.

Bate's departure symbolizes this shift. After eight years helping make Fremont one of Tesla's most productive plants, he's stepping aside for a new generation of managers who'll navigate this unprecedented industrial transformation.
