BYD is giving the Atto 3 a serious upgrade with the EVO version—doubled horsepower, 800V architecture, and genuine range gains. The Chinese automaker has transformed its compact SUV into a legitimate performance machine with up to 449 horses in all-wheel drive and 510 km of range.

A radical technical overhaul under the skin

The Atto 3 EVO sits on BYD's latest e-Platform 3.0 architecture. Goodbye front-wheel drive: the model now runs rear-wheel drive on the Design trim or dual motors on the Excellence. This major technical shift brings a new five-link multilink rear suspension (replacing the old four-link setup) for sharper handling dynamics.

The LFP Blade battery jumps from 60.5 kWh to 74.8 kWh and uses "cell-to-body" integration—cells built directly into the chassis structure. Translation: better rigidity, more cabin space, and cleaner packaging.

The real game-changer? An 800-volt architecture that cranks charging power from 88 kW to 220 kW. Plug into the right charger, and BYD claims 10-to-80% in just 25 minutes.

Performance gains that actually impress

The Design rear-wheel-drive version serves 313 horsepower (230 kW) and 380 Nm of torque, crushing 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds versus 7.3 seconds before. WLTP range jumps to 510 km.

The Excellence all-wheel-drive version packs 449 horsepower (330 kW) and 560 Nm via twin motors. It dispatches 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds—that's Golf R territory. Range settles at 470 km despite the extra grunt.

On paper, the Atto 3 EVO sits comfortably above the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Kona Electric in the compact electric SUV pecking order—at least in raw numbers.

Extra space and smarter tech

Rear-wheel drive freed up real estate up front, so you get a 101-liter frunk. The main trunk gains 50 liters for a total of 490 liters (expandable to 1,360 liters with the rear seats folded).

Inside, the gear selector migrates to the steering column, opening up the center console. The 15.6-inch touchscreen now includes Google services (Maps, Play Store, Assistant) and NFC smartphone charging authentication. The Vehicle-to-Load function can feed external devices up to 3 kW of power.

Pricing that doesn't follow the script

Despite all the technical fireworks, BYD keeps the Design rear-wheel-drive base model at €38,990. The Excellence all-wheel-drive version's price tag hasn't dropped yet, but expect a modest premium.

That positioning puts it squarely against the Volvo EX30, Hyundai Kona Electric, and Jeep Avenger electric. One catch: it misses France's eco-bonus due to its environmental score.

When can you actually get one?

Orders are open now, with deliveries starting spring 2026. BYD throws in a 6-year vehicle warranty and 8-year/250,000 km battery coverage.

Taking direct aim at the big names

With this refresh, BYD is making a calculated move at the Tesla Model Y and Europe's segment leaders. The Atto 3 EVO now delivers supercar acceleration, genuine highway range, and ultra-rapid charging in an aggressively priced package.

The Chinese automaker—which grew its European sales by 227.8% according to ACEA—is betting this evolution captures new customers and closes the gap in markets like France, where it's still fighting for visibility.

This rapid upmarket push reveals something important: Chinese manufacturers move faster than legacy automakers when it comes to iterating and upgrading.
