2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee: 324 HP with 4-Cyl Turbo

1154 words6 min readBy Jules Dubois

The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee gets a new heart with the 2.0-liter Hurricane 4 Turbo engine producing 324 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. This turbocharged four-cylinder gradually replaces the Pentastar V6 across multiple trims, marking a technological turning point for the American SUV. The 4xe plug-in hybrid disappears from the lineup, simplifying the range.

A Powerful Hurricane 4

The big change for the 2026 model year is the arrival of the Hurricane 4 Turbo engine. This powerplant delivers 324 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque—more than the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, which produces 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft. The new four-cylinder now equips the Laredo Altitude, Limited, and Summit trims, while the base Laredo and Laredo X versions retain the V6.

💡 Technical Point

The Hurricane 4 uses Turbulent Jet Ignition (TJI) technology, a pre-chamber combustion system borrowed from Formula 1 and already featured in the Maserati MC20's Nettuno engine.

This engine shares only three things with the six-cylinder Hurricane: bore, stroke, and name. Everything else was designed specifically for this block, including the oil filter, which differs from other Jeep four-cylinders. The engine runs on regular gasoline and enables towing up to 6,200 pounds.

Performance That Surprises

On paper, the numbers impress. With 35 psi of boost pressure, this small engine delivers more power than many V8s of yesteryear. During initial testing, journalists were impressed by the performance, though some noted a slight turbo lag and more vibration than the V6.

The transmission remains an 8-speed automatic that sends power to the rear wheels or all four wheels depending on the configuration chosen. The 2026 Grand Cherokee maintains its recognized off-road capabilities, with various driving modes adapted to difficult terrain.

When Will It Be Available?

The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee is already available at American dealerships as of February 2026. Early deliveries have begun with a starting price of approximately $40,000 for the base two-wheel-drive Laredo version. Top-tier Summit versions can exceed $60,000.

Goodbye to the 4xe Plug-in Hybrid

Jeep has decided to eliminate the 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain from the 2026 lineup. This technology, which combined a 2.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine with two electric motors for 375 total horsepower, suffered from recurring reliability issues. The brand prefers to focus on its conventional powertrains while awaiting new electrified models.

💡 Key Figure

The Grand Cherokee is Jeep's best-selling model, representing a significant share of the brand's U.S. sales.

This streamlined lineup comes with a trim reorganization. Jeep announces three main levels: Laredo, Limited, and Summit, with several variations like the Laredo X or Limited Reserve that add some complexity to the offer.
