Stellantis Charts New Course Amid Auto Industry Upheaval

The automotive industry is navigating unprecedented upheaval. Between technological mutations, regulatory pressures, and new competitive challenges, manufacturers must rethink their strategies. Stellantis and Great Wall Motor perfectly illustrate these transformations at work, each adopting different approaches to navigate this industrial storm.

Electrification Hits Industrial Reality
EV adoption is running headlong into real-world technical hurdles. Stellantis is getting hammered by supply chain bottlenecks for high-capacity batteries. The ACC Douvrin plant—a joint venture between Mercedes, Stellantis, and TotalEnergies—is currently churning out just 1,000 vehicles per month with its cells. That's what happens when ambitions meet reality.
This industrial squeeze is rippling through the group's EV lineup. The Peugeot e-3008 and e-5008 with the 97.2 kWh battery are facing serious delivery delays. The Citroën C5 Aircross with the bigger battery? Launch postponed.
Meanwhile, innovation is happening elsewhere. CATL, the Chinese battery behemoth controlling nearly 40% of the global market, just announced a battery capable of handling 1.8 million kilometers while charging at 5C (full charge in 12 minutes). That's not an incremental improvement—that's a market reset button.
The Shocking Thermal Engine Comeback
Faced with pure EV letdowns, Stellantis is executing an unexpected strategic pivot. The group is extending the lifespan of its Firefly engines—machines Carlos Tavares once condemned in favor of Puretech blocks. These Italian mechanics, currently powering the Fiat Panda, Jeep Renegade, and Compass, will be brought up to Euro 7 standards.
This decision marks a major reversal in the manufacturer's playbook. Where the old guard preached "all-electric everything," Antonio Filosa's new direction is betting on technological flexibility.
How Renault Is Reinventing Hybridization
Renault and Geely are developing something genuinely promising through their HORSE joint venture. The EREV system (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) transforms any electric vehicle into an extended-range version using a small 1.5-liter petrol engine as a generator.
This tech could outfit the future Renault Mégane starting in 2028, delivering over 1,000 kilometers of range. Horse's H12 Concept already shows remarkably efficient fuel consumption of 3.3 liters per 100 km on the WLTP cycle—beating plenty of diesels on paper and on the road.
Chinese Giants Invade Europe
The Chinese offensive is taking an unprecedented form with the Ford and Geely agreement. The American manufacturer will let the Chinese group produce its electric models in European factories, particularly the Saarlouis plant in Germany. This partnership lets Geely sidestep EU tariffs on China-built vehicles.
Great Wall Motor, another major Chinese player, is equally aggressive about its European footprint. This "reverse localization" strategy flips the script where Western automakers once planted flags in China.

What Future for Stellantis' 14 Brands?
On May 21, 2026, Antonio Filosa will unveil Stellantis's new strategic plan from Auburn Hills, Michigan. Choosing American soil over Europe isn't geographical—it's symbolic. The group is refocusing on the U.S., where thermal powertrains still drive margins.
The org chart has already tilted Italian, replacing the French dominance inherited from the PSA era. This "transalpine takeover" is bringing a potential overhaul of the group's 14-brand portfolio.

Ferrari Thrives in the Eye of the Storm
While the industry convulses, Ferrari is sitting pretty. Maranello employees just pocketed record bonuses hitting €14,500, courtesy of an exceptional 2025 posting €7.15 billion in net revenues.
The Prancing Horse benefits from a order book saturated through 2027, proving luxury marques are immune to the turbulence. The upcoming all-electric Ferrari Luce, whose interior was recently shown, confirms the brand's measured approach to EV conversion.
