2026 Toyota C-HR Electric: 338 HP Crossover Returns

Toyota is resurrecting the C-HR after four years of absence with a fully electric formula. This compact crossover arrives with 338 horsepower, 287 miles of range and a starting price of $37,000 before fees. Toyota's first gasoline model to go entirely electric, it's directly targeting Tesla Model Y buyers.

A Comeback After the 2022 Failure
The original C-HR exited the American market in 2022 after a rough ride. Sold exclusively as a naturally-aspirated front-wheel-drive model, it struggled against better-equipped competitors. This time, Toyota is hitting hard with a radically different approach.
The 2026 C-HR completely abandons the combustion engine for dual electric motors. Based on the e-TNGA platform, it shares its technical foundation with the bZ but in a more compact format. At 177.9 inches long versus 184.6 for its bigger brother, it positions itself as the range's compact electric alternative.
Performance That Changes Everything
Gone are the days of the old model's wheezy engine. The new C-HR packs two electric motors—one front, one rear—delivering 338 horsepower total. This power actually puts it above a GR Corolla, which maxes out at 300 horsepower.
Acceleration reflects this: the 0-60 mph dash takes 4.9 seconds. Performance that puts it in the ring with the Tesla Model Y Performance and its 4.8 seconds. The 74.7 kWh battery promises up to 287 miles of range in the base SE trim, though the 20-inch wheels on the XSE trim pare that down to 273 miles.
When Will It Arrive?
Toyota plans to launch the 2026 C-HR in the first half of 2026. Orders should open several months before sales begin, likely around fall 2025.
Pricing That Hits the Mark
With a starting price of $37,000 before delivery charges, the C-HR slides under the $40,000 threshold. An aggressive position that places it $7,000 below an entry-level Tesla Model Y.
The XSE trim climbs accordingly, but Toyota hasn't revealed its price yet. What the company does confirm: all versions come standard with all-wheel drive, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and an electric liftgate.
Charging Strategy: Betting on Tesla
Notable detail: the C-HR adopts the NACS connector, giving it access to Tesla's Supercharger network. A strategic move that dramatically expands charging options. Maximum charging power is capped at 150 kW though, placing the crossover squarely in the segment's middle tier.
Interior Mirrors the bZ Playbook
The cabin largely adopts the bZ architecture with a 14-inch central screen and digital instrumentation. Seats use SofTex (Toyota's synthetic leather) with suede inserts on the XSE version. Rear legroom takes a hit with 3 inches less space than the bZ, though early testers say it's still acceptable.
Trunk capacity reaches 720 liters—respectable for the segment, but hampered by a tight opening according to some reviewers.
A Sportier Version in the Works?
The project's chief engineer hinted that a more powerful version would be "pretty easy" to develop. Music to the ears of performance fans, though no timeline has been confirmed. The bZ Woodland already sports beefier motors, proof Toyota has the technical means.
This 2026 C-HR marks a turning point for Toyota in EVs. After a tentative start with the bZ4X, the company seems to have cracked the formula: convincing performance, controlled pricing, and Supercharger access. Now we'll see if the American public shows up this time.
